Kat Reinhert has a lovely way of looking at the world through the experiences of others, and her new EP, “Other People’s Stories”, gives that idea room to grow. Moving away from the usual autobiographical approach to songwriting, she turns her attention to people, their experiences, and the little moments that can reveal so much about a person’s life. Some of the songs are inspired by real people, while others begin with an observation and develop into imagined stories. Together, they form a thoughtful collection about the experiences we share as human beings. The EP explores relationships, loss, aging, regret, resilience, and the connections we make with those around us. Reinhert is interested in the space between knowing someone’s story and imagining what they might be going through. It’s an interesting perspective, especially when so much of our understanding of other people comes from brief conversations or small details we happen to notice. Her songwriting gives these moments room to develop, inviting listeners to look beyond the surface.
With a background in jazz, folk, and popular music, Reinhert brings a varied musical experience to her songwriting. Her voice is expressive and full of character, moving from quiet, intimate moments to more lively passages. She has a natural ability to bring personality to her stories, keeping the focus on the people behind them. Her experience as a songwriter is clear, especially in how she blends jazz influences with the directness of folk storytelling. Another interesting part of this release is Reinhert’s behind-the-scenes work. For the first time on a multi-tracked recording, she serves as sole producer. She also approaches the arrangements as part of the songwriting process, giving each song its own musical direction based on the character and story at its center. She is joined by Perry Smith and Jesse Lewis on guitar, Matt Aronoff on bass, Ross Pederson on drums, and Matt Cossey on organ on “Opaline”. Aaron Nevezie mixed the EP, and Alex DeTurk mastered it at Bunker Studios in New York City.
Personally, I really like the idea behind this EP and the empathy that runs through its songwriting. I also appreciate how Reinhert draws on other people’s experiences and turns those observations into something listeners can connect with. Following her 2025 EP “Normal”, “Other People’s Stories” is another interesting step in Reinhert’s creative development. It’s also the second project in a planned five-year artistic arc, giving listeners a closer look at her ongoing work as a songwriter and producer.
