Pitched somewhere between the whirling, all-encompassing energy of a sandstorm and the beautiful serenity of the desert, Kidä’s latest slice of R&B wonder, “Sand Invades Everything”, is a tactile and transformative odyssey. From the very first distorted synths to the hot and heavy bassline, much like an extreme force of weather, the track consumes listeners in a larger-than-life plight. One in which they are scooped up among a dust cloud and taken through a multitude of levels and textural elements that sinuously blend as they float over.
You can tell from the off that as well as an impressive vocalist, Kidä is an acclaimed producer and sound designer. Taking inspiration from the vast and eclectic mix of cities she has made her home, the product is an uncanny soundscape – the threads are familiar in many ways, but weaved together as they are, the product stands out as its entirely own fabric. Having only revealed one EP to the world so far – as well as a multitude of collaborations with the likes of Yves Tumor and GAIKA – “Sand Invades Everything” is a rich new dawn for Kidä’s quietly expanding musical oasis.
Expanding on the trip-hop and sundry sounds of her previous works, it is rare that an artist can meld together so many distorted and reverbed elements in a song and it maintain such an undeniable sheen. Paired with her soulful vocals that lace beneath the surface of the music as an instrument in her own right, “Sand Invades Everything” is a brilliant showing of the potence and potentiality of Kidä’s music.
