JR Sargent – Daddy’s Shoes

JR Sargent’s “Daddy’s Shoes” has a lovely country feel, a country waltz that tells a story of love, family roots, and discovering what you really want. Featuring Jeanette Brown on vocals and Billy Ziogas on production, the song picks up where the earlier release “Are You Man Enough to Be My Man” left off, bringing the cowgirl’s story to another chapter. After leaving Texas for a man from Nashville, our cowgirl has had time to think about what she wants in a partner. Her search for someone who can fill her daddy’s shoes leads to a rather interesting realization. Maybe the man she’s been looking for isn’t in Nashville after all. Deep down, her heart still belongs to Texas, and to the kind of cowboy she grew up knowing.

The waltz rhythm suits the story beautifully. The arrangement has a familiar country charm, with Billy Ziogas’s instrumental backing adding plenty of feeling. Nothing gets in the way of the story. The melody flows easily, making it a pleasant listen for anyone who enjoys traditional country music with a strong story at its center. Jeanette Brown does a wonderful job with the vocals. Her voice brings personality and warmth to the lyrics, making it easy to follow the cowgirl’s thoughts as she looks back on her choices. She brings just the right amount of emotion, keeping the performance engaging while letting the character’s personality shine.

JR Sargent brings a little humor and food for thought to a country song. The idea of finding a man who can fit into her daddy’s shoes says a lot about family, expectations and the qualities we look for in someone we love. Yet there is also something quite sweet about her eventual realization that her heart never really left Texas. “Daddy’s Shoes” is a charming follow-up to the previous release, with a story that country music fans can easily appreciate. It is about knowing where you come from, understanding what matters to you, and perhaps admitting that home was where your heart belonged all along. Look out for its release on November 14.
