Wenallt Star – HE

Wenallt Star return with “HE”, a new single that brings together classical strings, heavy electronic dub and spoken-word poetry. The Welsh/Anglo collective released their acclaimed album ‘…all her geese are swans’ in 2025, and this latest release offers another glimpse into their experimental approach ahead of a new album planned for December 2026. David Lambert and musician and sound artist Duncan Chapman created “HE,” which opens with a string quartet before moving into deeper, heavier electronic sounds. The shift gives the track a striking mood change, taking the listener from a classical opening into something darker and more intense. Lucy Leland adds her own touch with a fractured haiku delivery, bringing an unusual vocal presence to the mix.

David Lambert’s spoken-word passages are another important part of the song. Using the cut-up technique associated with William S. Burroughs and David Bowie, he reworks text from John Berger’s novel ‘The Foot of Clive’ into a different kind of storytelling. The words sit alongside the music, making the track feel part literary experiment, part musical exploration. As the song moves towards a calmer, more peaceful ending, the contrast with its heavier passages becomes even more noticeable. Sean South handles the production and mix, giving the electronic sections a dark, almost menacing atmosphere. The strings bring a different character to the arrangement, while Duncan Chapman helps bring the contrasting sounds together. Lucy Leland’s contribution adds another layer of individuality, giving the track plenty to explore on repeated listens. I particularly enjoy how the song moves between delicate strings and heavier dub sections. That contrast gives “HE” a character of its own. I also like the spoken-word elements, which add an interesting literary layer to the listening experience.

Wenallt Star offers plenty for listeners who enjoy music that steps beyond familiar structures. “HE” combines poetry, experimental electronics, and classical instrumentation in a way that makes for an intriguing listen.
