Tall Days are back with their first new album in seven years, and Breakers wastes little time getting the guitars turned up. The New Jersey duo of Graham Hartke and Joe DeAngelus have built the record around the same simple setup that has shaped their sound for years, but there is more happening around it this time. The guitars are rough around the edges, the drums hit hard, and the songs have plenty of hooks to keep things moving. Recorded at the band’s own Snack Factory studio between 2024 and 2026, Breakers draws on garage rock, blues rock, indie rock, and old-school rock ’n’ roll. The duo also brings in Hammond organ, saxophones, recorder and a collection of percussion, giving some of the tracks a different character while keeping the guitars and drums at the center.
“Destroy” gets the album off to a confrontational start, turning the end of a bad relationship into a song about breaking away and starting over. “Gaslight Bomb” leans into a heavier garage-rock sound, with fuzzed-out guitars adding plenty of grit to its message. Both tracks have that rough, loud quality that suits Tall Days so well. Then “She Is My Girl” changes the mood. Written about Hartke’s young daughter, the album brings a warmer side, with congas, bongos, claves, guiro, vibra-slap, cabasa, and maracas joining the usual guitar and drums. Family members also appear on backing vocals, giving the song an especially personal touch. “NYC Rock ’N’ Roll” brings the record back to the streets and clubs that have influenced Tall Days, drawing on the long history of rough-edged New York rock. It fits naturally alongside the album’s louder moments while giving Breakers another strong connection to the scene that surrounds the duo.
I really like how Tall Days keep the record raw while still giving the songs enough melody to stick around. For me, the best moments come when that noisy two-piece attack meets the more personal side of the writing. Breakers is a solid return from Tall Days, with plenty of guitars, big drums, and songs that have their own personality. If you enjoy garage rock, bluesy riffs, and the kind of rock ’n’ roll that doesn’t need a huge setup to make an impact, this is an album worth spending some time with.
