I like how relatable the idea behind “Loser” feels. It is easy to connect with a song about feeling like you have fallen short and still finding a reason to keep moving. There is also a lot of personal history behind the song. Case left home at 18 to pursue music in Los Angeles and went through difficult periods, including living out of her car while trying to build a career. That makes the message of “Loser” feel especially genuine. The idea of continuing after rejection and uncertainty is not just something she is singing about. It is something she has experienced herself.
Her determination has taken her a long way. Case has built an independent audience of more than 1.4 million YouTube subscribers and over 300 million video views. She has also won the $1 million grand prize in Usher’s Megastar competition, received MTV’s Cover of the Year award, reached the iTunes Top 100, and toured across Europe and Asia. For me, “Loser” is at its best when it keeps things honest. The song does not turn every difficult moment into a perfect success story. It acknowledges that sometimes simply getting through a bad period and continuing forward is already a win.
