Calico City are back with “Gotta Go”, the latest single from the Perth/Boorloo six-piece and the final preview of their upcoming debut EP, “Second In Line”. Released on August 7, the track gives a lively glimpse of what the band have been building toward before the EP arrives on September 18. Originally formed in high school, Calico City have spent the past few years finding their sound and becoming a familiar name around the Perth music scene. Their music brings together alternative rock and reggae, with a relaxed Australian feel running through the mix. They have also shared stages with Beddy Rays, Dear Sunday, SOPHIAN and Birdland, adding to their growing presence.
“Gotta Go” gets moving quickly with raucous guitars, punchy drums and the combined vocals of Brianne Reyes and Sienna Law. Their voices work particularly well together, with harmonies that give the track an extra lift and hooks that are easy to remember. The guitars bring plenty of bite, while the reggae influence gives the verses a loose, grooving feel. I really enjoyed the way the track moves between those two sides. The louder guitar-led sections give it plenty of energy, while the more relaxed parts keep things from feeling too heavy. It has a carefree quality, but there is also a sense of tension underneath it that fits the subject of complicated friendships.
That idea connects directly with “Second In Line”, an EP built around the different sides of friendship and the moments when relationships can leave you feeling like a lesser priority. “Gotta Go” fits nicely into that bigger picture without losing its own character. For me, this is an enjoyable introduction to Calico City. The combination of reggae grooves, rock guitars and two strong vocalists gives the band a sound that feels natural and full of personality.
